A Road Story – Chapter One – Beginning

We left Delta at 9 a.m. bound for Canmore with our friend Ed Gordon. Ed had come down from Whistler and would be our travelling companion.

I have known Ed from the time we were both campers and counsellors at Camp Wanakita at Haliburton, Ontario. Your old friends can come back into your life after you have been years apart and your conversations resume as if you had just seen them last week. This is Ed and I.

The first leg of our trip would take us to Canmore Alberta for a very special weekend. My friend Dr. Bill Hughes was helping to organize a gathering of friends and supporters of the band The Kruger Brothers. Weekend activities would include a world premier of the band’s concerto Spirit of the Rockies. Fittingly the performance would take place at the Banff Centre for the Arts. More on the Krugers later. I have known Bill since high school and interestingly, he was a Wanakita alumni as well.

As we made out way onto the Coquihalla Highway we started to listen to the Krugers CD’s we had brought along and this began to put us in the mood for the weekend ahead of us.

Along the way we encountered decorative snowsheds on the Coquihalla Highway

20120828-161757.jpgOur trip took us more than 10 hours in all and we arrived in Canmore and met Bill and his wife Jennifer at David and Christine Anderson’s house on the benchland. Their beautiful house looked out toward the mountains on the other side of the valley. After some brief conversation and snacks Vera and I left Ed with Dave and Christine and we went to the Solara Resort to settle in for the night.
