A Road Story – Chapter Nine – Jasper

Approaching Jasper National Park (pardon the quality, it was a drive-by photo out the window of the car).

For me any trip to Jasper, Alberta is like going home.  Although I am not an Albertan by birth, Vera and I were fortunate to live in Jasper for a few years in an earlier life.  To visit now gives us a chance to see old friends and catch up on local goings on and gossip. (Sorry Nancy, I don’t know where you went when these were taken.)

Blair and Buzz

Vera and I stayed with our friends Chris and Nancy Garnham (thanks for your hospitality) and I spent most of my time mountain biking with Chris and the legendary Kooli Magooli (who asked that his photos not be published and you will hear more about later) and taking photographs.

Medicine Lake alongside the road to Maligne Lake. Make sure to take this drive when visiting Jasper. Note the sharp mountain peaks caused by the seabed being thrust up by the shifting of the continental plates.
Maligne Lake with the boat dock on the left. Take the 40 minute drive from town and visit this great site. Take a boat tour to famous Spirit Island.

The boathouse at Maligne Lake.
A view down the lake from inside the Chalet
A close encounter with a grizzly bear on a trail while mountain biking, it was about 75 metres away. This young bear was fattening up on berries when we rode by. I paused to take a few picture and then moved on.
